After ‘temporary closure’ all summer, the 3D cinema attraction: Captain EO is confirmed to be opening on certain dates in October and November 2014.
Disneyland Paris’ official closure schedule shows that Captain EO will open between Thursday to Sunday every week in October and November and will also be open during the full school half-term week, which is the last week of October into November. This does of course mean that when it is not the half term week, Captain EO will be closed every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
The announcement comes as a surprise to the many of us who had assumed that Captain EO was ‘temporarily closed’ for good. It seems odd that the attraction hasn’t opened for the busy summer period, and prior to that it was only on part-time opening as well.
Captain EO is a 3D cinema experience starring the late Michael Jackson, and can be found in Discoveryland. The attraction was originally launched in 1987 in California’s Disneyland and operated in the same spot as today in Disneyland Paris between 1992 and 1998. After this time the attraction was replaced world-wide with a newer 3D film – ‘Honey I Shrunk the Audience’. However, after Michael Jackson’s death a group of fans began a campaign for Disney to reintroduce Captain EO to the parks as a tribute to Michael Jackson – being that ‘Honey I Shrunk the Audience’ was getting a little old by this point, Disney agreed, and in 2010 Captain EO returned to Disneyland Paris, among other parks.
Disney have made it clear that they will not be making any more 3D films of this type because 3D films are so readily available in domestic cinemas now, and Disney wants to create unique experiences which cannot be had elsewhere. Because of this, it isn’t clear what will happen to the cinema venue in Discoveryland when Captain EO does inevitably close for good.
